From Connecticut to Capitol Hill: The Statesman’s Journey of Roger Sherman

July 9 @ 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Free

Known for his sharp wit and intellect, Sherman was a masterful debater and negotiator. From humble
beginnings as a shoemaker, shop owner, and surveyor, Roger Sherman became one of the largest
landowners in Litchfield County. Fundamentally self-educated, he began his political career in New
Milford, CT, and elevated his influence with his election to the Connecticut General Assembly in 1755. As
the American Revolution approached, Sherman was a steadfast supporter of independence from British
rule. He played a vital role in the Stamp Act Congress, and with his deep understanding of politics and
commitment to serving the public, he participated in virtually every step of American independence.
With a wealth of life experiences and a keen legal mind, he had the unique opportunity to sign all four of
the most important documents in American history!
He often helped mediate disputes among his fellow founding fathers, using his knack for seeing both
sides of an argument to find common ground. His contributions were incredibly valuable to the young
nation. On a personal note, his life was just as fascinating. Join our storyteller, John Cilio, who resides in
Sherman, CT, as he dives into the life of this true American hero—a man dedicated to serving his country
and improving the lives of his fellow citizens!
