SUMMARY:The City without Jews
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, May 14th at 7PM for The City Without Jews\,\nSilent Film and Live Music featuring world-renowned musicians Alicia Svigals and Donald Sosin. \nJews are hounded by mobs and driven from Vienna in this 1924 expressionist film based on the\nsatirical novel by Hugo Bettauer. The sensational film that anticipated the Holocaust and cost\nBettauer his life was rediscovered in 2015. With commentary by film scholar Noah Isenberg (UT\nAustin) and a live score. Recently restored and featuring a new soundtrack\, The City Without\nJews is one of few surviving Austrian Expressionist films\, and the magnum opus of the great\ndirector H.K. Breslauer. Filmed in 1924\, it can be seen as a chilling premonition of the\nHolocaust—the premise is the political rise of the Christian Social Party\, which orders all Jews to\nevacuate Austria.\nWorld-renowned musicians Alicia Svigals and Donald Sosin will play their collaborative score\nthat has brought audiences to their feet at Lincoln Center\, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival\,\nand two dozen other venues in the US and Europe. Svigals co-founded the Klezmatics and has\nworked with Itzhak Perlman and the Kronos Quartet. Sosin has performed for silent films all\nover the world\, from MoMA and BAM to venues in Bologna\, Moscow\, Shanghai and Bangkok. \nDon’t miss this stunning event!

SUMMARY:Astrology Basics with Cindy Davis
DESCRIPTION:The JCC in Sherman presents Astrology Basics with Cindy Davis on Tuesday April 26th at 7:30pm \nThis introductory program will define the meaning and symbolism of the planets\, Western signs of the zodiac\, and the 12 house placements within a horoscope.\nWhy is a person born in April with an Aries Sun sign energetic\, hot tempered\, and insensitive\, while a person born in May with a Taurus Sun sign is patient\, stubborn\, and loyal? This class will explain the reason for these differences.\nEmphasis will be focused on developing an understanding of the meaning and function of these components to enable the participants to begin to understand how this cosmic science can be a tool to gain self understanding. Building a foundational understanding encourages an analytic perception of the role of archetypal patterns associated with the 12 planets\, 12 zodiac signs\, and the 12 house positions within the birth chart.\nThe class will encourage active participation fostering a fun and dynamic learning experience!

SUMMARY:Voices of Our Times featuring Nick Arne\, Bill Buttner\, John John Brown\, Bernie Kaplan
DESCRIPTION:The JCC in Sherman is excited to share that it will kickoff its 2022 weekend events on Saturday February 19th at 7pm with “Voices of Our Times”. This energetic program of local musicians includes Nick Arne\, Bill Buttner\, John John Brown and Bernie Kaplan. \nNick Arne is a Connecticut based singer-songwriter\, guitarist\, and music teacher. He graduated Western Connecticut State University in 2018 with a degree in Jazz Guitar. His own music combines elements of blues\, folk\, pop\, and rock with honest\, introspective lyricism. Nick is currently working on his second album\, due this year\, that will focus on love\, youth\, and life in a small town. \nNo Depression calls John John Brown’s debut album The Road “a supple and suggestive blend of astute Americana accompanied by a quiet\, reflective glow”\, while Americana UK said his newest release is “so well written that every song could be a short story”. Post to Wire noted that “John Prine is a clear influence in the way Brown rolls astute observations and a humorous slant into his lyrics”. Out on the road\, John John was invited to perform at the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock at Bethel Woods\, which is the original site of the legendary festival. Over the years\, he has been chosen as a 2020 Kerrville New Folk winner\, an Emerging Artist at the 2017 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, and a winner of the 2016 South Florida Folk Fest singer/songwriter contest. Seeped in good storytelling and fingerpicking melodies\, John John Brown seems to have discovered part of the mystery that surrounds the great singer/songwriter tradition. \nBill Buttner has traversed the tri-state area playing his original songs to any and all who will listen. He says “I’ve been fortunate enough to be recognized in American Songwriter Magazine. In 2012 I was the winner of the Lehigh Valley songwriting contest. I’ve played in the Huntington (NY) Folk Festival as well as Groove in the Grove Festival in Budd Lake\, NJ and Old Songs Festival in Altamont\, NY. I’m honored to have played on a bill with Pete Seeger.”\nBill is proud to be a songwriter and to follow in the great tradition of his songwriting heroes Steve Earle\, Bruce Springsteen\, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. \nBernie Kaplan started writing songs when he got his first guitar over sixty years ago. Through high school and in and out of college\, Bernie played his songs in coffee houses\, colleges and bars.\nAfter retirement\, Bernie has returned to his roots as a songwriter. His songs cut across a wide range of genres\, from Latin to pop\, rock to folk\, jazz to indie\, reflecting his many life experiences and influences. All of his music is united by compassion\, hope\, and a bone marrow deep commitment to our better angels.\nBernie currently splits his time between Sherman\, CT and NYC and serves as Chairperson of the Board of Samaritan Daytop Village and on the Board of the JCCS. \nWe are also pleased to share that our Open Mic Series at JCC on Thursday evenings restarted on January 27 with our musician friends finding a venue to help share their love of music since 2019. We welcome you to join us on a Thursday evening whether you sing\, perform poetry\, or just listen as some of our audience members look to get the weekend off to a fun start. \nThe JCC in Sherman invested in a high-quality air filtration system in 2021 to enable programs to move indoors and all guests feel safe and comfortable wearing masks. For 2022 we are also asking that our guests and performers be vaccinated. \nWe welcome everyone to the JCCS no matter your religious affiliation\, we are a community center for all. As stated in the by-laws “the object of the JCC in Sherman is to enrich the life of our community by developing and implementing programs for the recreational\, educational\, and social needs of our community.” \nWe hope to see everyone in this beautiful part of Connecticut and our friends over the border in NY to join us for our outstanding programs.\nFor more information on all our programs please visit our website jccinsherman.org\, or call our office 860-355-8050.\n\n\n\nj

SUMMARY:The City Without Jews Silent Film and Live Music Accompanying Film
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, January 29th at 7PM for The City Without Jews\, Silent Film and Live Music featuring world-renowned musicians Alicia Svigals and Donald Sosin. \nJews are hounded by mobs and driven from Vienna in this 1924 expressionist film based on the satirical novel by Hugo Bettauer. The sensational film that anticipated the Holocaust and cost Bettauer his life was rediscovered in 2015. With commentary by film scholar Noah Isenberg (UT Austin) and a live score. Recently restored and featuring a new soundtrack\, The City Without Jews is one of few surviving Austrian Expressionist films\, and the magnum opus of the great director H.K. Breslauer. Filmed in 1924\, it can be seen as a chilling premonition of the Holocaust—the premise is the political rise of the Christian Social Party\, which orders all Jews to evacuate Austria. In the ensuing months\, the sober reality of a society without Jews sets in\, as cultural institutions close and cafes are replaced with beer halls. Eventually\, the economy declines and unemployment runs rampant. Based on the dystopian book by Hugo Bettauer and intended originally as political satire\, it became the subject of controversy and censorship\, especially in conjunction with the rise of Nazism.\nWorld-renowned musicians Alicia Svigals and Donald Sosin will play their collaborative score that has brought audiences to their feet at Lincoln Center\, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival\, and two dozen other venues in the US and Europe. Svigals co-founded the Klezmatics and has worked with Itzhak Perlman and the Kronos Quartet. Sosin has performed for silent films all over the world\, from MoMA and BAM to venues in Bologna\, Moscow\, Shanghai and Bangkok. Don’t miss this stunning event! \nReservations are required. Tickets are $20 Member and $25 Non-Members.\nThis special performance will be held indoors\, masks will be required to be worn by all individuals regardless of vaccination status.\nThe JCC in Sherman has been a gathering place for the local communities in the Candlewood Lake area and nearby New York towns since 1994.\nThe mission of the JCCS is to provide high quality educational\, cultural\, and social programs to Sherman\, CT and the surrounding communities serving all people irrespective of age\, race\, or religion.
