SUMMARY:The Four Horsemen
DESCRIPTION:We are happy to announce The Four Horsemen are coming back on Saturday\, September 18th at 6:30PM! Band members include David Ray\, Mike Latini\, Dave Goldenberg and George Mallas. All four of the Horseman are singer-songwriters\, each with their own unique style! \nTickets: https://jcc-in-sherman.square.site/product/the-four-horsemen-41001-ticket-sales/115?cs=true&cst=custom \nDavid Ray is an accomplished musician whose songs have been sung by the likes of Shawn Colvin. David has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the industry—Roger McGuinn\, Joan Osborne and John Leventhal just to name a few. Along with Lyle Lovett\, Richie Havens\, Julie Gold and others\, his early Fast Folk recordings are now in the permanent collection at The Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. \nMike Latini grew up performing his music in New York City and Boston. His immediately accessible music\, engaging personal style and unique lyrical perspective enable him to ride the rails from the sublime to the ridiculous\, and make all the stops in between. Mike’s storytelling is second to none. He will soon release his third CD titled “Iron City\,” on the heels of two previous critically acclaimed releases “Ace LaVida” and “Ace Rides Again.” \nDave Goldenberg is a satirical singer-songwriter who has opened for comedians Joan Rivers\, Robert Kelin\, Judy Gold and Paul Reiser\, along with such musical artists as Steve Forbert\, Jill Sobule\, Vance Gilbert and others in CT. His songs not only tickle your funny bone\, but make you stop and take notice of some of the absurdities in our day-to-day lives. Dave’s music video “Goin’ to a Tea Party” was picked up by the Huffington Post and has been viewed by thousands on YouTube. He is a crowd favorite and will leave you laughing and smiling. \nGeorge Mallas has been writing and playing his piano-based songs since his teen years. George’s musical influences are some of the greats\, such as Joni Mitchell\, Jackson Browne and James Taylor. His melodic songs touch your heartstrings on subjects of love\, longing and redemption. George has released two CDs\, the latest his wonderfully received “unscathed.” George hosts the weekly radio show “The Songwriters’ Block” along with Melanie Berti\, heard Wednesday evenings on Pawling Public Radio. \nReservations Required. Tickets are $20 Member and $25 Non-Members

SUMMARY:Gallery Show "Artistic Perseverance"
DESCRIPTION:This show will be held at The Silo\, 44 Upland Road\, New Milford\, CT 06776. \nGala opening will be 6:30- 8:30pm Saturday Sept 11th\, and additional viewing Sunday Sept 12th from noon to 4:00pm. \nVCA invites you to view a compilation of work completed by our camp artists. \nEven with all that is going on through this tough time\, our artists persevered\, creating amazing works of art. While developing new skills\, or enhancing existing ones\, these artists expanded their self-confidence\, helping them overcome obstacles\, and gained an understanding of planning to completion. \nThis is a show of recognition and acknowledgement of these artists’ hard work and dedication. \nWe want to thank Alessandro Piovezahn of the Silo for hosting this great event.\nWe ask that all attendees bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to New Milford Social Services.\nMasks will be required.

SUMMARY:The Unforgiven: Wagner\, Jews\, and Antisemitism
DESCRIPTION:The Unforgiven: Wagner\, Jews\, and Antisemitism \nNotwithstanding Richard Wagner’s infamy as one of the most vituperative anti-Semites of his age\, a large number of Jews embraced his music\, chief among them Theodor Herzl. In this talk\, based on his 2020 book Wagnerism\, Alex Ross will try to untangle some of the complexities surrounding Wagner’s relationships with Jews\, without seeking a uniform reading of a contradictory record. \nAlex Ross has been the music critic of The New Yorker since 1996. He is the author of The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century\, Listen to This\, and Wagnerism: Art and Politics in the Shadow of Music. In 2008 he was named a MacArthur Fellow. \nThis program will be held on Zoom. We do ask you to please register online if you plan on attending this virtual event: https://www.jccinsherman.org/upcomingevents/the-unforgiven-wagner-jews-and-antisemitism\nThis event is free\, donations are welcome.

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:On the Road Again & Kristi Flagg & John Kane Duet \nSaturday\, July 10th 7PM-9PM\nTickets $20 Members | $25 Non-Members\nReservations Required: https://jcc-in-sherman.square.site/product/on-the-road-again-kristi-flagg-john-cane-duet/128?cs=true&cst=custom\nThis concert will be held outdoors. In case on inclement weather\, the concert will be held indoors. \nOn The Road Again is comprised of three friends who have a deep love of music and decided to perform together in 2021…the life we love is making music with our friends. \nJulie Sorcek – Flute/Sax/Vocals: Julie Sorcek is an accomplished musician\, performing on flute\, saxophone and vocals. In addition to being a member of the band On the Road Again\, she performs swing and jazz with both the band SwingSet and the duo Fluke\, and performs a mix of pop & oldies music with Rio Sorrentino. Julie is a veteran of the Connecticut folk music scene for many years\, having played with contra and family dance bands Wry Bred and the Reel Thing. She is also a member of the Celtic bands Chicks ‘n Sync and Fiddleuisce. Julie is in demand as a “sideman” on flute & harmony vocals at Danbury\, CT area open mics. \nNancy Janutolo – Percussionist: Nancy started playing drums at 5 years old when she sat on her father’s lap while he played his drums and she continues to play to this day. She began her public performances when she was the drummer/percussionist for numerous community theater productions throughout Connecticut which helped her hone her skills and understanding of difference styles and rhythms. She has been in many locals bands and has recorded with various local artists and songwriters and is currently enjoying playing with Tammy Lee Dunn and Julie Thompson Sorcek in their band On The Road Again which is a three piece all women band who cover many country\, rock and pop songs and enjoy making music with their friends. \nTammy Lee Dunn – Guitarist/Singer: Tammy Lee began her musical journey at the age of 9. Over the years\, she has been fortunate to perform with hundreds of different musicians and has been recently humbled to play with some of the best people and musicians in the area. Her love and only instrument of choice is a 12 string guitar and her goal is to bring music to friends and share her love of performing with others; bringing musicians together as much as possible. She is happy to be able to support so many local volunteer groups and organizations through many different music projects. Tammy mainly performs in CT with her band\, On The Road Again. They play rock\, country and always a little bit of love. \nWhen Kristi was in her mid 20’s she took a break from her life as a touring musician\, opening for the likes of Odetta\, John Gorka\, and the Indigo Girls; a break that lasted the better part of 25 years. Then\, in the summer of 2018\, she found herself at an open mic. By the end of the night\, she was singing again. Four months later\, to her surprise\, she was writing songs for the first time in a long while. 40 plus songs written in that following year include the 11 which make up the tracks on Brave New View. In the words and melodies are the stories of her adult life: the passing of her mother\, the dissolution of a 20 year marriage\, her discovery and exploration of meditation\, new love\, and the essence of the sacred in everything and everyone. Kristi opened her heart back up to music\, balancing life’s harder earned lessons\, and its most profound joys in melody and words. “We learn from love by falling madly into or by tumbling awkwardly out of it; reaching out for its ancient wisdom or finding lessons tucked down deep in a long forgotten memory. Brave New View has a prayerful theme running through its veins: in liberating my own being\, may I benefit others.” She invites you to share in the good vibrations. Peace.

SUMMARY:Hate in the US: A Conversation with Kenneth Stern & Nadine Strossen
DESCRIPTION:Hate in the US: A Conversation with Kenneth Stern & Nadine Strossen \nJoin us for a special zoom event on Tuesday\, June 22nd at 7PM. Kenneth Stern will be interviewed by Nadine Strossen about understanding hate and antisemitism in the United States today\, and the relationship between the two. How do we understand the level of hatred in the United States today\, especially in the aftermath of the Capitol Insurrection\, rising hate crimes against Jews and Asian Americans\, and a year after the George Floyd murder? And do we have too narrow a lens when we think about antisemitism? What do we gain\, or lose\, when we think about it as a form of hate? And what are the best\, and worst\, ways to combat it? \nKenneth S. Stern is the director of the Bard Center for the Study of Hate and an attorney and award-winning author. For twenty-five years\, he was the American Jewish Committee’s expert on antisemitism\, and he was also the lead drafter of the “Working Definition of Antisemitism.” He has argued before the Supreme Court of the United States and testified before Congress\, and he is a frequent guest on television and radio. His work has appeared in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, USA Today\, and The Forward. His newest book\, The Conflict Over the Conflict: The Israel/Palestine Campus Debate (New Jewish Press\, 2020)\, has been called a “must read\,” “thoughtful and provocative\,” a “gift\,” a “rare and uncompromising testament to free expression” and a “blueprint for how to navigate the ‘conflict over the conflict’ on campus.” \nNew York Law School Professor Emerita Nadine Strossen\, past national President of the American Civil Liberties Union (1991-2008)\, is a leading expert and frequent speaker/media commentator on constitutional law and civil liberties\, who has testified before Congress on multiple occasions. The National Law Journal has named Strossen one of America’s “100 Most Influential Lawyers.” Her 2018 book HATE: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech\, Not Censorship was selected by Washington University as its 2019 “Common Read.” Strossen has served on the Anti-Defamation League’s Civil Rights Committee\, and she has won awards from the Jewish Council for Public Affairs\, the National Council of Jewish Women\, and the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. \nThis is a free virtual event on Zoom\, donations welcome.
