In his younger years\, he held a variety of sundry jobs from dairy farming to school custodian while also performing on the coffee house circuit before forming a band that eventually played just about every kind of music from standards to pop hits\, from country to disco\, as well as originals representing a wide range of genres. During that time he taught himself to play flute and dulcimer in addition to guitar. After starting a family\, his music mostly gave way to a long and fulfilling career as an educator\, where he served as a coach\, English teacher\, drama director\, and administrator\, culminating in a 26 year tenure as a high school principal. Always\, at times along the way and whenever he could\, he found time to play and to write songs. Currently retired and splitting his time between the city and Sherman\, Bernie is again deeply engaged in songwriting and playing flute.

DESCRIPTION:From New Jersey\, John Gorka is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who got his start at a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania. \nIn addition to 11 critically acclaimed albums\, John released a collector’s edition box featuring a hi-definition DVD and companion CD called The Gypsy Life. Windham Hill also released a collection of John’s greatest hits from the label called Pure John Gorka. In 2010\, he also released an album with his friends and Red House label-mates Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson under the name Red Horse. Getting high praise from critics and fans alike\, it landed on the Billboard Folk Charts and was one of the most played albums on folk radio.

DESCRIPTION:Up to 90% of all visits to doctors’ offices are stress-related\, according to Harvard.  Stress can be considered as much a risk factor for disease as smoking. \nWhy can two people be in the same situation and respond to stress in different ways? \nCan changing the way we carry stress be a learnable skill? \nCome and learn the difference between good and bad stress\, increase awareness of how stress impacts the body\, and hear about the emerging pattern matching specific symptoms and diseases with specific stresses. Everyone will learn a technique to minimize stress and maximize vitality.

DESCRIPTION:About the Book: Litchfield County in the American Revolution\nFrom the first sparks of revolution in the 1770s\, Litchfield County played an important role in the War\nof Independence. Roger Sherman of New Milford was on the five-member committee that drafted the\nDeclaration of Independence. Oliver Wolcott of Litchfield signed the document and oversaw the\ntransportation of a toppled statue of King George III from New York City to his hometown\, where it\nwas melted down and turned into more than forty thousand musket balls. Those musket balls were\nperhaps fired by hundreds of local militia\, including Black residents\, who served in the war\, while many\nother residents helped furnish supplies and information for the army. However\, not everyone supported\nthe Patriot cause\, as the county was also home to those who remained loyal to the British King. Later\nyears saw the Continental Army make a winter encampment in New Milford and several visits by\nGeorge Washington. Local author and historian Peter Vermilyea reveals how liberty\, sacrifice\, and\nresilience in a small corner of New England helped shape the destiny of a new nation.

An early trailblazer\, Lady Alice Fenwick\, helped settle Saybrook Colony in 1638. Hannah Bunce Watson became an influencer and publisher of the oldest and largest Connecticut newspaper in 1777. Also\, find out about two young patriots who achieved fame for their “Midnight Rides.” \nKathleen O’Brien Hubbard was an educator in the Middletown Public School System. She has given talks at many Connecticut libraries\, historical societies\, and other venues. Kathleen enjoys sharing her knowledge and passion of history with others and enjoys reading\, researching\, and traveling. Her hobbies include gardening\, sewing\, and crafting. She has co-authored Arcadia-published books: Images of America: Middletown\, Legendary Locals: Middletown; Hidden History of New Haven\, and Hidden History of Middlesex County\, Connecticut.   During her research on CT women\, she became captivated with their accomplishments in all fields of life—many making significant contributions to their communities that impacted future generations. She enjoys highlighting some of these intrepid role models in her talks.

SUMMARY:Sunday Speaker Series: Gerard Monaghan "Connecticut Heroes"
DESCRIPTION:On May 3\, 1783\, General George Washington did something unprecedented in military history. Standing on the parade grounds at the New Windsor\, N.Y.\, cantonment\, he presented awards – the Badge of Military Merit – to two enlisted soldiers. It was the first time any military awards had been given to other than officers. Several days later\, a third soldier received the award.\n\nAll three recipients – the only ones documented during the Revolution – were from Connecticut. The story of how this award came into existence and the exploits that earned it are a little-known footnote in the American Revolution.\n\n\n\nGerard J. Monaghan\, a retired Army Reserve lieutenant colonel and military historian\, will take you through the history of this award – which became the Purple Heart – and examine the deeds of other heroic Connecticut residents.\n\n\n\n___\n\n\n\nGerard J. Monaghan\, co-founder and former president of the Association of Bridal Consultants\, had a parallel career\, teaching journalism and practicing marketing and public relations for the Army and Army Reserve for almost 30 years. He served in Belgium and with the 25 th Infantry Division at Cu Chi\, Vietnam. As a Reservist\, he was called up for Grenada\, Panama and Gulf I\, where he worked for Gen. Colin Powell and edited the Defense Department’s report to\n\nCongress on the war. A military historian\, he retired as a lieutenant colonel. In a prior life\, he was an editor for The News-Times in Danbury and The Advocate in Stamford. He holds degrees in journalism and political science\, and serves on the New Milford Planning Commission.
