SUMMARY:Derek Piotr and Folklife
DESCRIPTION:The Derek Piotr Fieldwork Archive (fieldwork-archive.com) was established by Derek Piotr in August 2022. The Archive contains over 1\,500 audio recordings made from March 2020 onward and preserves diverse representations of folklife: ballads\, hymns\, tales\, poems\, children’s songs\, and interviews among them. The focus of this collection is on the “non-singer”: someone with no background in musical performance who can nevertheless relate a song or folkloric memory. In this lecture\, Derek will walk you through the process of journeying everywhere from the United Kingdom to Appalachia to record these songs from non-musicians\, as well as the organization and development of the Archive as a web-based repository. \nDerek Piotr is a folklorist\, researcher\, and performer whose work focuses primarily on the human voice. His work covers practices including fieldwork\, vocal performance\, preservation and autoethnography; and is primarily concerned with tenderness\, fragility\, beauty and brutality. He has collaborated with artists including Scott Solter\, Nathan Salsburg\, and Thomas Brinkmann across various disciplines. His work has been supported by The Traditional Song Forum and The Danbury Cultural Commission and has featured on Death Is Not the End and the BBC.

SUMMARY:Stacey Dutton Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Come and listen to Stacey Dutton\, the author of The Sovereign Self\, at the Senior Center. \nAbout the Book: The Sovereign Self is more than a guide—it’s a reclamation. A manifesto for women who refuse to fade quietly into the background. A reminder that you are not finished. You are becoming—again. By the time we reach our sixties\, we’ve lived many lives. We’ve loved\, lost\, created\, and endured. We’ve been daughters\, mothers\, partners\, professionals\, caretakers—and now\, as the world grows quieter around us\, something within calls for more. This is the moment to claim your sovereignty: to live by your own design\, not by the expectations you’ve\noutgrown. In this deeply honest and empowering book\, Stacey Dutton invites women to step into a new era of wholeness. With warmth and candor\, she illuminates how the physical\, emotional\, and spiritual shifts of aging can become portals to greater power\, steadiness\, and freedom. The Sovereign Self is more than a guide—it’s a reclamation. A manifesto for women who refuse to fade quietly into the background. A reminder that the next chapter can be the most vibrant\, meaningful\, and self-defined of all.

Inspired by the classic trio work of Emmy Lou Harris\, Linda Ronstadt\, and Dolly Parton\, as well as Red Molly and the Wailin’ Jennys\, these neighbors got together for the sheer joy of singing. \nSusy Marker and Missy Alexander trade off on the lead vocals and high harmonies. They are the songwriters of the group\, crafting lyrics that are sometimes poignant\, sometimes funny\, and often both. Pat Walker is the chief arranger\, with a perfect ear\, a passion for the unexpected\, and a smoky bass line.

SUMMARY:Live Music with Norm Zamcheck & Andrew Livingston (Bride of Science)
DESCRIPTION:Join NYC duo Norman (Real Stormin) Zamcheck (composer\, vocalist\, keyboard) & Andrew Livingston (upright bass)\, ⅔ of Bride of Science\, for an acoustic concert described as upbeat\, unique\, & eclectic\, featuring a humorous & folk feel. \nThe group\, Bride of Science\, is the acoustic outlet of pianist composer Norman (Real Stormin) Zamcheck’s prodigious songwriting outlet. – 800 compositions & counting! Norman Zamcheck & Andrew Livingston\, ⅔ of Bride of Science will perform as a duo at the JCC Saturday February 28th at 7pm. \nBride of Science is a nearly half century collaboration between multi-guitarist Mat Kastner and Norm Zamcheck. College classmates\, they met sophomore year\, traveled southward after graduation with an eclectic rock band called “Milkweed\,” and continued to jam together over the years. They had their Nashville debut at Douglass Corner Cafe in 2023. Over the years Mat\, whose specialty is bluegrass and folk\, has lent his gifts to nearly all Norm’s songs\, and has contributed to nearly all of Norm’s 8 album releases over the past decade. Accompanying them is Andrew Livingston\, on upright bass. The trio is named after one of their songs\, a ditty loosely based on “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelly\, and also Norm’s mother\, wife of a world renowned scientist. \nBand info: realstorminnormanband.carbonmade.com \nMusic: https://realstorminnorman1.bandcamp.com/album/bride-of-science
