SUMMARY:Sunday Speaker Series: Book Talk With Professor Joseph Luzzi on "The Innocents of Florence"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Sunday Speaker Series with Professor and Author Joseph Luzzi on his latest release\, The Innocents of Florence: The Renaissance Discovery of Childhood. \nAbout the Book \nHow a Florentine orphanage rescued thousands of children and revolutionized childhood education amid the splendor of Renaissance art. \nThe story begins with the abandonment of the newborn Agata Smeralda on February 5\, 1445\, in Florence’s Hospital of the Innocents\, the first—but certainly not the last—child to be left at its doors. In an era when children were frequently abandoned\, often trafficked or left to die on the streets\, an orphanage devoted to their care and protection was a striking innovation. The Innocenti\, as it has come to be called—the first orphanage in Europe devoted exclusively to unwanted children—would go on to care for nearly 400\,000 young lives over the next five centuries. \nBuilt by the Silk Weavers Guild at a time when the wealthy were expected to contribute to civic life\, the Innocenti featured glorious arches designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and housed works by some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance\, from the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio to the sculptor Luca della Robbia. Meanwhile\, the new orphanage also redefined the idea of “childhood” itself\, particularly in education\, as boys were often taught not just Latin and basic numeracy\, but also a well-rounded curriculum that included art\, literature\, and music. Girls learned viable trades such as weaving and silk manufacturing\, and the Innocenti assisted them in securing suitable marriages to protect them from poverty or a life of prostitution. Over the centuries\, the orphanage oversaw groundbreaking scientific discoveries—it was a birthplace of modern pediatrics—while struggling against rampant disease\, constant financial crises\, and the dramatic ups and downs of Florentine politics in the Medici era \nReflecting in a touching preface on the major caregivers in his own life\, Joseph Luzzi narrates the fascinating history of this revolutionary orphanage\, offering readers the first comprehensive “biography” of a groundbreaking humanitarian institution that recognized poor and abandoned children as worthy of nurture—and thereby shaped education and childcare for generations to come. \nAbout The Author \nJoseph Luzzi is the Asher B. Edelman Professor of Literature at Bard College and an award-winning scholar of Italian culture. His book Botticelli’s Secret was named a Best Book of the Year by The New Yorker and was shortlisted for the Ralph Waldo Emerson Award. He lives in New York’s Hudson Valley. https://josephluzzi.com \nWhat People Are Saying \n“Joseph Luzzi’s compact study of a single orphanage in Florence is a marvelous—and sobering—history of how we think about so-called abandoned children and childhood itself. He helps us understand family structure in Italy\, certainly\, but he also offers insights into artistic patronage during the Renaissance\, Italian unification in the nineteenth century\, and post–World War II notions of human and children’s rights. A remarkable achievement. “ \n– John T. McGreevy\, author of Catholicism: A Global History from the French Revolution to Pope Francis \n__ \n“This is an extraordinary book: deeply researched\, beautifully written\, and morally urgent. With clarity and compassion\, Joseph Luzzi brings to life the heartbreaking realities faced by Florence’s abandoned children\, offering profound insights into Renaissance attitudes toward childhood\, honor\, and social worth. A work of both scholarship and conscience\, it challenges us to reckon with the past—and reminds us why the lives of children have always mattered.” \n– Ross King\, author of The Bookseller of Florence: The Story of the Manuscripts That Illuminated the Renaissance \n__ \n“As revolutionary in its mission as it is in its architecture\, the Hospital of the Innocents took on one of Florence’s most intractable social problems: an appalling number of abandoned babies\, providing the hope of a dignified life to these blameless children of poverty\, slavery\, and misfortune. Joseph Luzzi’s harrowing\, heartfelt book gives these Innocents something else: their own history.” \n– Ingrid Rowland\, coauthor of The Collector of Lives: Giorgio Vasari and the Invention of Art

SUMMARY:The Web They Wove: Women and Their Wardrobes During New England’s Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Underpinning the sensationalism of battle reports and broadsides is the often silent steadiness of women’s work with textiles. The choices they made every day about fashion and fabric consumption and creation drove the course of Revolution just as determinedly as any congress. As southern New England commemorates the 250th anniversary of the War for Independence\, it is these local lives dressed in fulled wool or spun silk that continue to inspire creativity\, resilience\, and empathy in us today. From the mythology of homespun to legends of midnight rides in red cloaks and calashes\, the Dirty Blue Shirts share stories of women who waged war on multiple fronts as well as a look at what they wore as their worlds turn’d upside down. This program is presented by costumed historians and includes reproduction clothing pieces and fabric samples\, as well as a PowerPoint presentation with images of extant originals.

SUMMARY:Gallery Opening
DESCRIPTION:Village Center for the Arts Presents December’s Featured Artist: Don Thorn \nExhibit Date/Time: Saturday\, December 6th 6:30-8:00 PM\nLocation: Village Center for the Arts\, 12 Main Street\, New Milford\, CT\nWebsite: www.villagecenterarts.org \nVillage Center for the Arts is proud to feature the expressive and inspiring work of Don Thorn as our December Featured Artist. \nFueled by the rich cultural mix of music\, skateboarding\, punk\, and hip-hop\, Don began his artistic path in Newburgh\, NY\, where he first connected with graffiti. After moving to Queens\, his art transformed from street murals to canvas\, allowing him to explore deeper emotional themes and personal growth. \nIn 2023\, during a pivotal time in his life\, Don entered a rehabilitation program where he rediscovered art as a source of healing and self-expression. This period became a catalyst for his renewed purpose\, leading to a body of work that is both vulnerable and empowering. This experience further empowered him to unearth his unique artistic voice and language. \n“I believe everybody has a creative side\, whether they know it or not\,” he says. “It’s their own form of expression.” \nJoin us at Village Center for the Arts in celebrating Don’s journey and powerful artwork this December. His exhibit serves as a reminder of art’s ability to heal\, connect\, and transform.\nDon’s paintings will be available to view for the month of December.
