In HOMEGROWN: Timothy McVeigh and the Rise of Right-Wing Extremism (May 2nd \, 2023/$29.99 hardcover)\, legal scholar and bestselling author Jeffrey Toobin traces a direct line from the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing carried out by McVeigh to the January 6 insurrection\, providing not only a powerful retelling of one of the great outrages of our time but also a warning for our future. \nTimothy McVeigh wanted to start a movement. Speaking to his lawyers days after the Oklahoma City bombing\, the Gulf War veteran expressed no regrets: killing 168 people was his patriotic duty. He cited the Declaration of independence from memory: “Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends\, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it.” He had obsessively followed the siege of Waco\, seethed at President Bill Clinton’s assault weapons ban\, and drawn inspiration from Rush Limbaugh. He conducted target practice by shooting at pictures of Hillary Clinton. A self-proclaimed white separatist\, he abhorred immigration and wanted women to return to traditional roles. As he watched the industrial decline of his native Buffalo\, McVeigh longed for a time when America was great. \nMcVeigh once declared\, “I believe there is an army out there\, ready to rise up\, even though I never found it.” But that doesn’t mean his army wasn’t there. As Toobin makes clear\, McVeigh was not an ideological loner\, as he is often portrayed\, but rather a participant in the conservative counter-revolution of the 1990s. Toobin details how McVeigh’s principles and tactics have flourished in the decades since his death in 2001\, reaching a culmination on January 6 when hundreds of rioters stormed the Capitol. \nBased on an exclusive interview with Attorney General Merrick Garland\, who\, as a mid-level Justice Department lawyer\, supervised the Oklahoma City bombing investigation\, Toobin also reveals how Garland is displaying the same mix of strengths and weaknesses in the January 6 probe that he did a quarter-century earlier. \nHOMEGROWN breaks news with original reportage based on nearly a million previously unreleased tapes\, photographs\, and documents\, including detailed communications between McVeigh and his lawyers. SUMMARY:River Run 5K to benefit the Ostomy Foundation
DESCRIPTION:The third annual New Milford River Run 5K & Kids’ Superhero Sprint will be held Sept. 30 at New Milford RiverFest.\nThe 5K will take participants at 4:30 p.m. along a USATF-certified course (CT18028JHP) following the Housatonic River on Young’s Field Road to Boardman Road and back. The course has minimal turns and little elevation change. Walkers are welcome\, too. Medals and prizes will be presented on stage at 5:45 p.m. After\, grab a bite to eat\, listen to live music and enjoy other offerings.\n \nThe Kids’ Superhero Sprint will kick off at 4 p.m. and take children 10 and under on a short course that will wind them around part of Young’s Field and to the 5K finish line. Medals and prizes will be awarded in several categories and treat bags will be presented. The cost is $5/child.\niRunCT will provide timing.\nThe Ostomy Foundation is the organizer of the event\n

DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday September 30th at 7pm as we welcome RED DIRT ROAD to the JCC in Sherman! \nRed Dirt Road will entertain you with their Americana / Western Swing & Red Dirt Music. \nDoug Mathewson started Red Dirt Road in 2006 and had gigs at the Towne Crier as well as local events. He was invited and performed 4 times at the yearly North Texas Songwriters Festival. The Red Dirt Road band all met at the Sherman Song Swap!\nFirst\, Susanna Marker\, Pat Walker and Doug. Then they added Bill Petkanas and Missy Alexander. After that – Pete Nelson\, Marty Finch and Nancy Janutolo. \nThis is a truly a local ground roots band and we are thrilled to have them perform here at the JCC in Sherman! \nRed Dirt Road performs original Americana music and a few covers. \nHistory:\nRed Dirt Road was formed shortly after Susy\, Pat and Doug met at the Sherman Song Swap. They had similar musical tastes and loved singing together. Soon songs took on arrangements and the group started singing in local venues.\nSusanna Marker’s strong vocal is backed up by her fiddle. Pat Walker directs the vocal harmonies and supplies her southern charm with vocals and banjo. Missy Alexander\, songwriter and vocalist. Doug Mathewson on vocals\, dobro\, mandolin and guitar. Bill Petkanas on guitar and mandolin. Peter Nelson on bass. Songwriters Doug Mathewson\, Susy Marker\, Peter Nelson and Missy Alexander provide the repertoire.
