DESCRIPTION:About the Book: Litchfield County in the American Revolution\nFrom the first sparks of revolution in the 1770s\, Litchfield County played an important role in the War\nof Independence. Roger Sherman of New Milford was on the five-member committee that drafted the\nDeclaration of Independence. Oliver Wolcott of Litchfield signed the document and oversaw the\ntransportation of a toppled statue of King George III from New York City to his hometown\, where it\nwas melted down and turned into more than forty thousand musket balls. Those musket balls were\nperhaps fired by hundreds of local militia\, including Black residents\, who served in the war\, while many\nother residents helped furnish supplies and information for the army. However\, not everyone supported\nthe Patriot cause\, as the county was also home to those who remained loyal to the British King. Later\nyears saw the Continental Army make a winter encampment in New Milford and several visits by\nGeorge Washington. Local author and historian Peter Vermilyea reveals how liberty\, sacrifice\, and\nresilience in a small corner of New England helped shape the destiny of a new nation.

DESCRIPTION:Come join author and speaker\, Kathleen Hubbard on Famous Connecticut Women. Connecticut women were innovative and impactful. An early trailblazer\, Lady Alice Fenwick\, helped settle Saybrook Colony in 1638. Hannah Bunce Watson became an influencer and publisher of the oldest and largest Connecticut newspaper in 1777. Also\, find out about two young patriots who achieved fame for their “Midnight Rides.” \nKathleen O’Brien Hubbard was an educator in the Middletown Public School System. She has given talks at many Connecticut libraries\, historical societies\, and other venues. Kathleen enjoys sharing her knowledge and passion of history with others and enjoys reading\, researching\, and traveling. Her hobbies include gardening\, sewing\, and crafting. She has co-authored Arcadia-published books: Images of America: Middletown\, Legendary Locals: Middletown; Hidden History of New Haven\, and Hidden History of Middlesex County\, Connecticut.   During her research on CT women\, she became captivated with their accomplishments in all fields of life—many making significant contributions to their communities that impacted future generations. She enjoys highlighting some of these intrepid role models in her talks.
